# On-Field Assesments

Sway makes On-Field Assessments a much simpler process by offering the following screenings:

# Red Flags

For acute emergency management, Red Flags checks for 9 symptoms:

  • Neck pain or tenderness
  • Double Vision
  • Weakness or tingling/burning in arms or legs
  • Severe or increasing headache
  • Seizure or convulsion
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Deteriorating conscious state
  • Vomiting
  • Increasingly restless, agitated or combative

# Maddocks

Assesses orientation to time and place through the following questions:

  • What venue are we at today?
  • Which half is it now?
  • Who scored last in this match?
  • What team did you play last week/game?
  • Did your team win the last game?

# Observable Signs

Checks for the following symptoms:

  • Lying motionless on the playing surface
  • Balance / gait difficulties / motor incoordination: stumbling, slow / laboured movements
  • Disorientation or confusion, or an inability to respond appropriately to questions
  • Blank or vacant look
  • Facial injury after head trauma

# Glasgow Coma Scale

The Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) is a clinical scale used to reliably measure a person's level of consciousness after a brain injury. The GCS assesses a person based on their ability to perform eye movements, speak, and move their body. These three behaviors make up the three elements of the scale: eye, verbal, and motor.

# Cervical Spine

It is common for individuals that have experienced cognitive impairment to have some lingering symptoms such as: headaches, difficulties with vision, dizziness and concentration that may be related to cervical joint or vestibular dysfunction.

This assessment checks the following symptoms:

  • Does the athlete report that their neck is pain free at rest?
  • If there is NO neck pain at rest, does the athlete have a full range of ACTIVE pain free movement?
  • Is the limb strength and sensation normal?
